All Abilities & Adaptive Sport Ministry

All Abilities

Games and physical activities for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Adaptive Sport

Competitive sport for individuals with physical disabilities, such as Paralympic sports or sports for the deaf or blind.

All Abilities

FCA’s ministry exists to ensure that every athlete—regardless of ability—has the opportunity to experience the love of Christ through sport. Inclusive sports, often seen in programs like Special Olympics Unified Sports, pair athletes of varying ability levels on the same team. These environments are intentionally relational. The focus is less on elite performance and more on creating shared experiences, friendships and mutual respect.

FCA’s mission has always been to lead every coach and athlete into a growing relationship with Jesus Christ and His Church. But the word “every” demands intentionality. If we say, “every coach and athlete,” then athletes with disabilities—especially intellectual disabilities—must be engaged, empowered and equipped, not simply accommodated.

This attitude allows us to pursue our mission in three key ways:

1. Creating True Community

Inclusive sports break down barriers. When athletes compete side-by-side, stereotypes dissolve. Participants develop empathy, confidence, communication skills and real friendships. Coaches grow in patience and creativity. Volunteers discover gifts they never knew they had. Families find they’re not alone.

2. Multiplying Discipleship Opportunities

The relational nature of inclusive sports creates space for meaningful discipleship. Teams become small communities where the Gospel is lived, taught and demonstrated through encouragement, perseverance, teamwork and prayer.

3. Reflecting God’s Heart for Inclusion

Jesus consistently welcomed people whom the culture overlooked. Inclusive sports become a picture of that same welcome—a tangible expression of Christlike hospitality and love. This work requires clarity, prayer and faithful partnership. We want to build a ministry that

honors athletes, empowers coaches and reflects Christ without confusion around branding or purpose.

Adaptive Sport

FCA ministry is also focused on competitive disability sports. This side of our ministry mirrors what many are familiar with in the Paralympic movement—high-caliber, elite competition involving athletes (some professional) with physical disabilities. Disability sport ministry is not only about inclusion—it’s about excellence.

These athletes train rigorously, compete intensely and operate within structured leagues, classifications and systems similar to any other high-level sport. They are elite competitors with discipline, drive and deep commitment to athletic growth. FCA Adaptive Sports Ministry recognizes that this environment requires tailored ministry approaches—ones that respect the competitive culture and meet athletes where they are.

This side of our ministry is crucial for the following reasons:

1. Adaptive Sport Athletes Are Often Overlooked Spiritually

While the Paralympics receive moments of global attention, many adaptive sports operate year-round with little visibility. Athletes travel, train intensely and navigate unique challenges that often go unnoticed. They need chaplains, mentors and community just like any other competitive athlete.

2. Competitive Environments Opens Doors for Influence

Coaches, trainers and team leaders in adaptive sports shape culture in powerful ways. FCA can come alongside them through team chaplaincy, coaches’ huddles, Character Coaching, pre-competition devotionals, leadership development and prayer support.

3. Excellence Honors God

Athletes with physical disabilities show remarkable determination and resilience. They reflect

God’s creativity and strength as they push the limits of what the human body can accomplish— even when that body moves differently. FCA desires to celebrate and support that excellence, not merely commend participation.
